If the Colorado Rockies and New York Yankees are going to make a trade involving Trevor Story, much of it will hinge on the play of Gleyber Torres, says ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Here is what Jeff Passan is saying about a potential Colorado Rockies-New York Yankees trade involving Trevor Story.
In an interview on Sunday, ESPN’s Jeff Passan said that, with Gleyber Torres playing what he called “a substandard shortstop” for the New York Yankees, the Rockies could well be getting a call from Yankees general manager Brian Cashman about obtaining Story to fill the shortstop position.
“You’d have to think that (Cashman) is considering the possibility of acquiring Trevor Story,” Passan said in the video clip you can see below.

Story is currently on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. How soon Story returns from the injured list could determine not only exactly when he is traded, but also his potential trade value, assuming the Rockies will trade him by the July 30 trade deadline. With Story’s contract set to expire at the end of the year and no reported discussions about an extension from the Rockies, it is likely believed that Colorado will trade the two-time All-Star shortstop before the trade deadline rather than letting him walk at the end of the season.
Could that trade involve the Yankees? If so, it’s likely because of the lack of consistency and power coming from Torres, who enters Tuesday’s play with a .259/.342/.331 slash line and just two home runs and 19 RBI.
After hitting 38 home runs in 2019, the 24-year-old Torres has hit just five combined during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and the first two months of the 2021 campaign.
Torres is also having issues in the field, as was seen over the holiday weekend in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
With the Yankees entering Tuesday 5.5 games behind the Rays in the American League East standings, it’s clear that the team needs a boost in order to not only catch Tampa Bay, but also pass the Boston Red Sox in the standings as well.
However, obtaining Story will come with a cost for any team, particularly after all of the public backlash following Colorado’s much-maligned trade of Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals. There have been plenty of potential Rockies-Yankees trade proposals involving Story floated out there, including this one.
Of course, the New York Yankees isn’t the only team that could be a fit for Story. Oakland has been viewed as a potential destination as well.
