Colorado Rockies infielder Brendan Rodgers went 1-for-3 on Saturday night to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. However, whether Rodgers would extend his streak or not wasn’t the biggest concern Rockies fans had about him on a smoke-filled night in LoDo.

Batting in the bottom of the sixth inning, Rodgers was hit in the right hand on an 0-1 pitch by Miami Marlins reliever Zach Pop. Rodgers crumpled to the ground in pain and was attended by Rockies medical personnel as manager Bud Black looked on. He would leave the game as Ryan McMahon entered the contest as a pinch runner.

McMahon would stay in the game at third base while Garrett Hampson shifted from third to second, where Rodgers started the night. Colorado would go on to post a 7-4 victory over Miami.

Here is the latest on the hand injury suffered by Colorado Rockies infielder Brendan Rodgers

Officially called a right hand contusion, Rodgers is listed as day to day. After the game, Black said that X-rays on Rodgers’ hand came back negative and he reiterated that it was “a bruise.”

It sounds as if the Rockies dodged a bullet with Rodgers being hit directly on the hand by what Black called a fastball that registered at 95.3 mph per Statcast.

The 14-game hitting streak for Rodgers is the longest of his career. During the streak, he’s hitting .362 (21-for-58) with four doubles, a triple, and four home runs. He’s also hit safely in 16 of 18 games since the All-Star break.

While we don’t know exactly how long Rodgers will be out or if he will miss any time at all, it’s safe to say that, if he misses time, look for Hampson to get additional time at second base in his absence. Additionally, Hampson could potentially slide into the second hole in the lineup where Rodgers has been hitting in recent games.

Colorado’s schedule could also help Rodgers with a day off on Monday before the Rockies begin a two-game series in Houston prior to heading to San Francisco for a four-game set against the Giants.

UPDATE: Rodgers was not in the starting lineup on Sunday. Hampson is playing second base and batting seventh while McMahon is in the second spot behind Raimel Tapia in the batting order.
