On Friday night, the Colorado Rockies opened their three-game series against the Miami Marlins at Coors Field by posting some eye-popping numbers in a 14-2 romp.

Colorado launched five home runs in support of starting pitcher Germán Márquez, who continued to dazzle on the mound. One came off Miami catcher Sandy León, who was making his third pitching appearance of the season and took the brunt of a three-run, four-hit eighth inning that put the final bow on what was a night for the Rockies to flex their muscles at the plate.

There is plenty to talk about from Friday night, including an appearance by the sprinklers on the field at the wrong time.

That’s now how many wins Márquez has on the season after hurling six scoreless innings and giving up just two hits while walking one and striking out seven in a 76-pitch gem.

Friday night was his third start of the season where Márquez threw six scoreless frames with two or fewer hits allowed. All of those outings have come at Coors Field, making Márquez the first pitcher in franchise history to have three such starts in Denver in a single season.

Márquez is also in elite franchise company in terms of wins. Only he, Jon Gray (2016-19), and Jorge De La Rosa (2008-09, 2013-14) are Rockies pitchers to have four 10-win seasons to their credit.

That number is the combined feet (distance) of the two home runs hit by C.J. Cron in Friday’s win. The Rockies first baseman got his team on the board in the second inning with a 412-foot solo shot into the Colorado bullpen, then followed that with a three-run blast that traveled 456 feet and landed on the concourse beyond the left field seats.

Cron’s 15th and 16th homers of the season were his first since July 20 and marked his 12th career multi-homer game. He hadn’t pulled that trick since May 18, 2019, in Seattle when he was a member of the Minnesota Twins.
