As the time nears for Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story to return from the 10-day injured list, it appears another Rockies infielder is heading to the IL in his place.

Rockies first baseman Matt Adams was removed from Tuesday night’s game in Miami against the Marlins after his second at-bat. Following the 6-2 loss, Colorado manager Bud Black said that Adams experienced some “elbow discomfort” after fouling a pitch into the Rockies dugout.

"“He felt a sensation in his elbow,” Black said. “He came back in after that inning, went down in the tunnel where there’s a net and a tee and he tried to take some swings and couldn’t, so we’re a little concerned about this one.”"

Black said that the right elbow discomfort will likely put Adams on the shelf for the near future.

"“It looks as though he’s going to be headed to the injured list,” Black said."

So what does this latest injury mean for the Colorado Rockies?

With Adams likely heading to the injured list, the predicted roster shuffle the Rockies were going to have to make becomes a little easier in the short term. Story is expected to come off the injured list before the team finishes its series in Miami, so Story can take the place of Adams on the active roster.

UPDATE: Story was not ready to come off the injured list on Wednesday, so Adams was placed on it and Connor Joe was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque.

At first base, C.J. Cron and Joshua Fuentes will likely see the bulk of the playing time.

For the 32-year-old Adams, this is expected to be his second stint of the season on the injured list. After being selected from the alternate site on April 29, the Rockies placed Adams on the 10-day injured list on May 14 with a right shin contusion after fouling a ball off it during an at-bat.

Adams has struggled at the plate for the Rockies, getting just five hits in 31 at-bats with only one extra-base hit (a double) among the five hits. He has also struck out eight times in those 31 at-bats.
