Sure, there were some great moments for the Rockies in 2019, but let’s focus for now on the 2018 season. Colorado fans will remember it as the second of two consecutive postseason appearances, with the final highlight of the season being a Wild Card win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Of course, that’s one game to remember from the 2018 season, but what about some others? Let’s look back at the ones that stood out to us.
We will be watching them sometime this week. How about you?
Here are four of the regular-season games to remember from the 2018 season.
April 11 — Colorado vs. San Diego at Coors Field
Let’s just call this the Nolan Arenado vs. the world game. Luis Perdomo plunks Arenado in the bottom of the third and mayhem ensues as Arenado charges the mound.
While the fight is obviously the star of the game, DJ LeMahieu went 3-for-5 and Wade Davis nailed down his fifth save of the season in a 6-4 Colorado win.
July 25 — Colorado vs. Houston at Coors Field
No trash cans here. Charlie Blackmon hits his 20th homer of the season in the bottom of the ninth off Collin McHugh to give the Rockies a 3-2 walk-off win.
August 10 — Colorado vs. Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field
The legend of Ryan McMahon grew this night, and grew even larger the next night with another clutch, late-inning bomb against the Dodgers.
Let’s not forget that McMahon had just entered this game as an injury replacement for Arenado. This game had all of the emotions as Colorado won, 5-4.
Another bonus? Watching Adam Ottavino earn the save with some nasty sliders.
September 5 — Colorado vs. San Francisco at Coors Field
Trevor Story. Three long home runs. A 5-3 win over the Giants. What’s not to love?
October 2 — Colorado vs. Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field
Some personal memories of this game here.
I was at Game 163 the day before at Dodger Stadium when the Rockies lost and were forced into a travel situation to play in Chicago the next day against the Cubs in the Wild Card. I remember booking the red-eye flight from Los Angeles to Chicago and couldn’t help thinking about the previous season when the Rockies had to travel to Arizona for the Wild Card game and had their season quickly ended in a loss to the Diamondbacks.
It was a cold, damp night at Wrigley Field that night and the Cubs were in the same situation as the Rockies (having lost to the Brewers in Game 163 at Wrigley Field). However, the Cubbies didn’t have to travel and the North Side fans were ready to watch their team get another shot at Milwaukee in the postseason.
There was such a buzz in the venerable stadium that night. You felt on edge with every pitch, and you knew everyone else in the Friendly Confines was feeling the same way.
Of course, Tony Wolters would be the unlikely hero that night, coming into the game on a double switch and getting the 12th-inning single to give the Rockies the lead. But there were plenty of other heroes for the Rockies that night, including starter Kyle Freeland with his 6.2 innings of four hit, no-run pitching. And let’s not forget Scott Oberg with four strikeouts in 1.1 innings of relief to get the win and close the door on the Cubs.
Yes, this is a game worth rewatching over and over and over again.
