Colorado Rockies, Scott Oberg agree to extension

SAN DIEGO — The Colorado Rockies have rewarded one of their most consistent relievers in recent years with a contract extension.
On Wednesday afternoon, Bob Nightengale of USA Today broke the news that the Colorado Rockies had agreed with Scott Oberg on a three-year, $13 million contract extension. The agreement also includes an $8 million club option for the 2023 season.
Over the past two seasons, the 29-year-old right-hander has compiled a 14-2 record with a 2.35 ERA. Last season, Oberg assumed the closer role in early August only to be knocked out of action just under two weeks later by axillary artery thrombosis (blood clots) in his right arm. He underwent season-ending surgery to address the condition and Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich told media members (including Rox Pile) on Monday night that he expected Oberg to be ready for spring training.

It is very likely that Oberg will head into spring training as one of the leading candidates to be Colorado’s closer, joining potential options Wade Davis, Carlos Estevez and Jairo Diaz in the closer/late-inning role.
Oberg was drafted by the Rockies in the 15th round of the 2012 MLB draft. Coming out of the University of Connecticut, Oberg has seen action in 259 games (covering 257.1 innings) for the Rockies over the last five seasons.
