In what has been a tough second half of the season, one of the best stories for the Colorado Rockies has been pitcher Tim Melville.

It’s been a long and winding journey for Tim Melville to reach the Colorado Rockies, including injuries and stops in independent ball. But one thing that has always been around Melville and has interested him outside of baseball is barbecue.

Nick Groke of The Athletic wrote an excellent article that talks about the 29-year-old Melville and the barbecue restaurant in Phoenix where he was working last fall before he decided to give baseball another try.

The Rockies are certainly glad he did. Since being called up on August 21, Melville has shined in his two starts for the Rockies, going 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA. He has allowed just seven hits in 12 innings while striking out 10. With Colorado’s entire Opening Week rotation now on the injured list, Melville has become a bright spot, not only for the team but for the Colorado fan base as well.

Now in Denver, Melville has taken to the streets to try some of the local barbecue and try to find his favorite spots. You can track his exploits on his Instagram page as he ventures out in search of smoked meats of all kinds.

Melville chatted with me for our latest episode of the Rox Pile Rockies Report and was excited when I said we were only going to talk barbecue. No baseball talk here. Let’s get to the “meat” of the matter and ask Melville about his barbecue roots, his favorite cuts of meat and his most-loved side dishes as well.
