The Colorado Rockies not only dropped a game to the Boston Red Sox in extra innings on Wednesday night but also saw their All-Star shortstop leave the game in the ninth inning with an injury.

In the bottom of the ninth, Trevor Story and Raimel Tapia collided in short left field chasing a flare hit by Boston’s Mookie Betts. As the two Colorado Rockies fell to the ground, the ball bounced into the stands for a two-out ground rule double.

Following the collision, Story gathered himself and got to his feet as he was tended to by Colorado head trainer Keith Dugger. A few moments later, he tested himself by running but was pulled from the game after a consultation and replaced by Pat Valaika.

After the game, Colorado manager Bud Black said the injury occurred to Story’s left knee.

"“The trainers right now are optimistic,” Black said in his postgame interviews. “There was obviously a collision. We didn’t see it from the dugout because of the angle. Our medical staff looked at some of the replays on television and it looked like there was a collision and hard contact to the knee. Crossing our fingers he’s going to be OK.”"

Black said that the decision to lift Story was made on preliminary thoughts coming right after talking to the All-Star shortstop.

"“We just thought the thing to do was to remove him,” Black said. “I think there was enough from our end that we wanted to get Pat in the game.”"

The 26-year-old Story entered the game hitting .276 on the season with nine homers and 28 RBI. He had also stolen eight bases, tied for the second-highest number in the National League.
