Can you believe it, Colorado Rockies fans? Pitchers and catchers report to Scottsdale in just one week and spring training is almost here. It’s been a long and sometimes quiet winter for Rockies fans so let’s take a look at a couple of news items of interest to keep your week moving along.

In regards to spring training, it has been announced that the Colorado Rockies will be wearing the same style of caps this season in spring training that they debuted last year. You can see those hats, and the hats being worn by Major League Baseball’s other 29 teams, in this article.

The cap will once again feature the prominent “C” from the Colorado state flag within the outline of the mountains. Personally, I am a big fan of the design and bought one of these last year when they came out and I have worn it all over the world. That Colorado “C” is recognizable and a conversation starter, no matter where you are.

Speaking of conversations, there have been plenty regarding Nolan Arenado and his future with the Rockies. Could what is happening right now with Manny Machado impact Arenado’s decision to re-sign with the Rockies? It’s very possible and here is why.

As you know, Machado is one of the biggest prizes of this free agent market and was expected to land a lucrative deal. However, he is still waiting on that deal … if it even happens. Because of the slow market, it’s been suggested that Machado could think about taking a one-year deal in order to re-enter the free agent market next offseason … which is the same offseason where Arenado could potentially be testing free agency.

Just imagine Machado and Arenado both on the market and teams maneuvering to see which one could be a part of their roster. It was unthinkable at one point but that is how slow the market has become for one of the game’s young superstars.

Machado’s struggles to land a big contract with just one week until pitchers and catchers report is a reminder that baseball owners aren’t throwing money around as some expected they might. If the Rockies are truly at “the crescendo” of talks with Arenado about a long-term extension as has been reported, it certainly hasn’t hurt the Rockies that their All-Star third baseman has seen Machado and Bryce Harper slow to land a sizable contract.

It would be a huge boost for the Rockies to sign one of the icons of the franchise and take any potential drama (on that front) out of the season before it begins. It would also be a sign that Colorado is serious about winning for years to come by making the commitment to Arenado.

Are changes coming to baseball in the near future?. dark. Next

Sure, it’s been a slow offseason … but that could be just one of the factors that may help Colorado lock up Arenado for years to come.
