The Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates have had the first game of their three-game series at Coors Field postponed by rain.

Rain started falling in the top of the fifth inning just about the time Colorado Rockies starter Kyle Freeland struck out opposing pitcher Joe Musgrove to end the frame. Fans took cover as big drops began to come down on the crowd.

Freeland and Musgrove are engaged in a pitching battle, with neither showing any signs of giving in to the other team. Freeland has allowed just two hits in five innings of work (including a double to Musgrove) while Pittsburgh’s right-hander was perfect through the first four frames. However, Nolan Arenado led off the fifth inning with a sharp single to right field, putting an end to any kind of perfect game or no-hitter watch. Trevor Story followed to right-center with a single, moving Arenado to third.

Next, Gerardo Parra hit a grounder to second base which was misplayed by Pittsburgh’s Josh Harrison, allowing Arenado to score.

Shortly thereafter, home plate umpire Eric Cooper signaled for the tarp to come out. The delay officially began at 7:55 p.m. local time with the Rockies taking a 1-0 lead with no outs in the bottom of the fifth.

Not only is heavy rain coming down, but lightning was also spotted in the area, causing an evacuation of the Rockpile section and the upper deck seating areas.

It has been an interesting day for weather up and down the Interstate 25 corridor. Earlier, softball-sized hail injured several people at the Colorado Springs zoo.
