Colorado Rockies morning after: Will Trevor Story play on Sunday?

SEATTLE — Saturday did not go the way that Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story had planned. However, he is hoping for different results on Sunday.

After being hit in the right foot by Seattle Mariners reliever Roenis Elias in the seventh inning of Friday night’s 7-1 win at Safeco Field, Story was unable to play in Saturday’s matinee rematch. With the quick turnaround between games, a bone bruise ended Story’s games played streak at 139 and also marked the first time during the 2018 season that someone other than Story had played shortstop for the Rockies for more than one inning. Pat Valaika filled in for Story on Saturday and went 2-for-3 at the plate to raise his season average to .151.

In an exclusive interview after the game, Story told Rox Pile his goal was to return to the field on Sunday for the series finale.

"“My goal is to play tomorrow,” Story said. “We’ve done a lot of treatment today and it’s feeling better, but it’s a bone bruise so it’s pain tolerance and stuff like that. I was able to hit today. Hopefully, I’ll be able to run tomorrow.”"

Prior to the game, Story tested the ankle and was seen hobbling around the Rockies clubhouse. It was little surprise when he was scratched before the opening pitch.

"“Last night, I finished the game — ran really hard — and I felt fine,” Story said. “It got a little sore last night, and I woke up this morning and it was a little swollen. It felt pretty sore.“We were trying to see if I could play as late as we could hold off. I couldn’t really run too hard today, so we played it smart.”"

Playing it smart is important for a Rockies team that surged to three games over .500 with Saturday’s win and has an off day on Monday before beginning a key three-game series at Coors Field against the National League West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. Having Story back in the lineup is important, both from a defensive standpoint and as a key member of a resurgent Rockies offense. Story is putting up some All-Star-worthy numbers, hitting .282 with 16 home runs and 60 RBI.

"“It’s become a regular thing for Trev, but he just couldn’t go,” Colorado manager Bud Black said of Story’s stranglehold on the shortstop spot this season. “He tried to go. He tried to get in there. We’ll see how he is tomorrow.”"

Over his last seven games, Story has only two RBI and no homers, but put together a .423/.483/.615 slash line and added a stolen base, one of his 11 on the season. Colorado has gone 6-1 during that same span.
