It wouldn’t be a Colorado Rockies homestand so far this spring without the threat of bad weather, now would it? The Chicago Cubs arrive tomorrow to take on the Rockies to start a three-game series just as a potent storm system is arriving in Colorado.

First, here is the good news: We need the moisture in Colorado and it doesn’t look like there will be any accumulating snow at 20th and Blake. The bad news is that Friday night’s game looks very likely to be postponed as the heaviest precipitation would be arriving around and after the time of first pitch.

Friday starts out in the 50s with a chance of morning showers. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm become more likely throughout that afternoon, before turning to a more upslope (we talked about this on Opening Day!) rain event.

Overnight temps remain marginal for a change to snow across the metro area. It’s very possible that moderate precipitation rates and a dynamic atmosphere could bring a change to snow even though the computer models aren’t currently too excited about it. Above 7k feet will see all snow and a LOT at that. In the foothills, 8 to 18 inches is definitely possible with Winter Storm Watches currently hoisted. Out ahead of the storm, we’ll have another windy day today with extremely high fire danger.

Although Friday looks like a washout, I expect rain/snowfall to end prior to Saturday’s first pitch. Coors Field handles water very well, and drains incredibly well, so unless there is an unexpected accumulating snow (not too likely) in downtown Denver, Saturday’s game should be a go.
