Except for a Carlos Gonzalez solo home run in the seventh inning, the Colorado Rockies’ bats were held in check again and the club lost 5-1 to the Miami Marlins on Friday night in south Florida.
Kyle Kendrick looked solid early for the Rockies, and didn’t allow a run until the fourth inning when Marcell Ozuna came to the plate with Christian Yelich on second base. Ozuna hit a foul ball down the left field line that missed being a home run by less than a foot, and then another foul ball that missed being a double by inches.
Finally straightening it out, Ozuna hit an RBI single that scored Yelich and put the Marlins on the board first, up 1-0.
In the sixth, Kendrick ran into trouble again when he allowed a solo home run — the 16th homer he’d given up this season — to Martin Prado to make it 2-0 Marlins, though Kendrick worked out of a two-on, nobody-out jam later that inning.
Kendrick’s counterpart, Marlins’ starter Jose Urena, stymied the Rockies for the better part of seven innings, before Carlos Gonzalez hit an opposite-field solo home run in the seventh to chase Urena.
Nevertheless, even with the score 2-1, Urena threw 6.2 innings, allowing just six hits and the run, while walking none and only striking out one Rockie, throwing 53 strikes out of 81 pitches.
Kendrick lasted into the bottom of the seventh, also throwing 6.2 innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out four Marlins while throwing 64 of his 104 pitches for strikes. Christian Friedrich came on with two outs and two on in the seventh, and induced a groundout to keep the score at 2-1 Marlins after seven full innings.
Ben Paulsen hit a lead-off double in the to of the eighth inning off Marlins’ reliever Carter Capps, but two strikeouts by Nick Hundley and Rafael Ynoa, and a pop-out by Charlie Blackmon stranded Paulsen on second.
Scott Oberg came on for the bottom of the eighth inning with the Rockies down a run, and walked two out of the first three hitters. J.T. Realmuto came up, and promptly blasted a three-run home run to put the game out of reach of the Rockies.
The Rockies and Marlins return to play Saturday afternoon, before finishing their series Sunday afternoon at Marlins’ Park. From there, the Rockies head to Houston to play the Astros for two games, before hosting the Astros for two more games next week.
