Vogelsong shuts down Rockies, despite rain delay rally

Coming into this start Ryan Vogelsong had 7.92 career ERA mark at Coors Field.  The Offense seemed prime for a big night.  So as Vogelsong threw six shut out innings, you can understand the confusion that left Rockies bloggers in on Twitter.

For the better part of his six innings Kyle Kendrick did his best to match his counterpart.  In his third consecutive start in which he pitched six innings or more, Kendrick kept the Rockies in the game for much of the night.  The sixth inning is where the wheels came off for Kyle.  After a base hit up the middle by Buster Posey, Brandon Belt blasted the 33rd upper deck shot in Coors history. While the Rockies offense struggled to find any sunshine, the Giants made themselves at home.  In the seventh the boys by the bay blew the game wide open chasing Kendrick and roughing up Ken Roberts scoring four runs in the stretch inning.  After back to back scoring singles by Joe Panik and Angel Pagan, Buster Posey cleared the bases with his fourth double of the year making it 7-0.    But hey Nolan Arenado keeps doing his thing!  Just give him the Gold Glove now.

The Rockies bats woke up in the seventh and eighth to make it exciting but it was too little, too late.  D.J. LeMahieu hit his second HR of the year opposite field to cut the lead to 7-3.  In the eighth, Wilin Rosario stayed hot since his return to show with an RBI double.

The most concerning part of the Rockies offensive woes has been the production of the “big Bats”.  Carlos Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan combined to go 1-11 on the night with the lone hit being a double in the eight by Tulo.  Cargo and Tulo came in hitting a combined .067 against Vogelsong, which is quite a surprise given Vogelsong’s troubles at Coors.  If the Rockies have any hope of getting back into the NL West, they must win these home games against the Giants and that starts with Cargo and Tulo coming through at the plate.

The Giants piled it on late scoring four in the eighth, highlighted by a Matt Duffy two run homerun.  Increasing the lead as well as some cheers for the road team.  Yeah us Rockies fans know you have your World Series, but we know how you roll Giant fans.

Then came the fun.  In the bottom of the ninth with two on and the offense starting pour it on, mother nature decided she wanted to join as well.  If the game can’t go on the fireworks will!  During the hour and forty-four minute delay, the Rockies gave the fans a rain delay firework show.  With the weather this May, I think we should petition for fireworks during every rain delay.

When play resumed the Rockies offense kept on rolling making things fun for the remaining fans.  Former Rockie JeremyAffeldt who was pitching the ninth before the delay remained the pitcher coming out of the break in a strange move by the Giants.  MichaelMcKenry, who was batting forArenado ripped an RBI single.  Cargo followed suit, leaving two on for Ben Paulsen.  Paulsen doubled off of the wall scoringMcKenry and advancing Cargo to third.  Fly outs byTulo and Rosario leftHundley as the Rockies last chance.  As it seems to be the theme for the past two weeks,Hundley stuck out to end the game.  Great game with great theater, hopefully the Rockies can steal the double-header tomorrow.
