The Colorado Rockies took on the San Diego Padres Sunday afternoon, trying to salvage one game in a three-game series at Petco Park.

Kyle Kendrick allowed six runs – including two home runs – and the San Diego Padres answered back every time the Colorado Rockies scored, defeating the Rox 8-6 on Sunday afternoon at Petco Park.

Kendrick lasted five innings, allowing six runs on six hits, with no walks (but two hit batsmen) and two strikeouts. Kendrick’s two home runs allowed now mark ten he has allowed in just six starts in 2015, which leads the team.

Charlie Blackmon got the party started early for the Rockies, hitting a solo home run off Padres starter James Shields in the first at-bat of the game.

Unfortunately, in what would be a theme throughout the game, the Padres answered back immediately, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first when Justin Upton homered off Kendrick.

In the fourth, Nolan Arenado hit a solo home run off Shields to tie the game up again at two runs apiece. Later in the inning, Michael McKenry doubled home Carlos Gonzalez to give the Rockies a 3-2 lead after three and a half innings off the Padres’ starter.

The Padres answered right back again, though, putting up three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. The inning was highlighted by Derek Norris’ two-run home run off Kendrick, who ended up throwing just 49 strikes on 87 pitches Sunday.

The Rockies got two more back in the top of the sixth to tie the game in an interesting way. With Blackmon on first, Corey Dickerson hit a routine ground ball that would’ve been an inning-ending double play, but after a replay review, umpires determined he beat out the throw and the Padres had to return to the field.

On the very next pitch, Arenado clubbed a two-run home run off Shields to tie the game at five, giving Arenado his sixth home run of the year (and fifth away from Coors Field).

Again, though, the Padres answered back and broke the tie, after Upton doubled in the bottom of the sixth to bring in Cory Spangenberg and give San Diego a 6-5 lead off Kendrick.

Then, in the seventh off reliever Brooks Brown, Jedd Gyorko hit a pinch-hit two run home run to make the game 8-5, and put it out of reach of the Rockies.

In the ninth, Charlie Blackmon hit another solo home run – his second of the game, and third in four days – off Padres closer Craig Kimbrel, but it was too little, too late.

The Rockies have now lost five games in a row, and sit at 11-13 through the first 24 games of the season.

The Rockies now return home to Denver, facing the Arizona Diamondbacks for three games beginning Monday, before seeing the Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field this coming weekend.
