MLB Free Agency: Nick Hundley Has Two-Year Offer; Could It Be From The Rockies?

Nick Hundley is a free agent catcher who has drawn interest from a number of teams. That includes rumors that linked Hundley to the Colorado Rockies. This week it was reported that Hundley has an offer from an unknown team.

I suppose we could make this into a “mystery team” situation, but it will surely be a letdown when Nick Hundley is the player in question, right?

Hundley, the 31-year-old free agent catcher in whom the Rockies have expressed interest this winter, is drawing interest from a number of teams. That includes the incumbent Baltimore Orioles.

What we know now is that Hundley has a two-year offer on the table from some team, and that team is not the Orioles. As reported by Roch Kobatko, an Orioles’ beat writer for MASN:

There’s at least a chance that this team that issued the two-year offer is the Rockies, right?

Granted, this is not exactly a blazing hot item on the MLB hot stove, but the question of what the Rockies are going to do at catcher is an important one for Colorado this off-season. The team will continue to explore trades for Wilin Rosario, they will continue to look for better options behind the plate, and they will ponder what they will do if they don’t end up trading Rosario.

With those questions hanging over the team, it matters who they find (or don’t find) to improve their situation at catcher. So it is that I am genuinely interested to know if the Rockies are the team that made the offer to Nick Hundley or not.

Nick Hundley batted .243/.273/.358 with six home runs and 22 RBI in 2014. He is a career .238 hitter who plays competent defense behind the plate. Signing him wouldn’t be a splashy move, but it would probably be an upgrade for the Rockies.

Now, this report about Hundley having a two-year offer came on December 19th. It would appear Hundley is in no hurry and believes that other two-year offers might be coming, so we might not know if the Rockies are the team making a push for him anytime soon.
