Colorado Rockies Rumors: New Manager Named Within Hours?

We may be very close to knowing who will be the next manager of the Colorado Rockies.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting that both the Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks will be naming their managers for the 2017 season within the next 24 to 48 hours. He names Phil Nevin and Torey Lovullo as the two prime candidates for the Arizona job but does not list anyone as a “favorite” for the Rockies position.

The timing of the announcement comes just after the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians finished up an epic World Series, with the Cubs capturing the title after a dramatic Game 7 win. With the 2016 season now officially in the books, teams can finalize interview with candidates who were involved in the World Series. For the Rockies, that could possibly include Chicago’s Dave Martinez, who recently received high praise from Chicago manager Joe Maddon, and Cleveland bench coach Brad Mills.

While no official interviews have been announced, it is thought that the Rockies will be looking for their next manager from outside the organization. The only internal candidate who has been mentioned as a potential successor for Walt Weiss is Colorado’s Triple-A manager, Glenallen Hill.

Weiss stepped down the day after the 2016 campaign concluded with a 283-365 record in four seasons at the Colorado helm. He guided the Rockies to a 75-87 record in 2016, the team’s best mark under his leadership.

One former MLB manager who was originally reported as interested in the position was Ron Roenicke. However, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post, has tweeted that Roenicke has not been interviewed and probably wouldn’t be before the new manager was named.

Among others mentioned for the position have been Atlanta’s Bo Porter and Eddie Perez, Miami’s Tim Wallach and former San Diego manager Bud Black.
