As we predicted on Tuesday morning, two members of the Colorado Rockies are heading to the All-Star Game on July 12 in San Diego.

As a result of player balloting, Colorado’s Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez are heading to the Midsummer Classic as a part of the National League squad. It’s the second All-Star selection for Arenado while CarGo will be making his third trip to the All-Star Game. They were two of eight position players who were named to the National League All-Star team by their fellow players.

The Chicago Cubs were the biggest winners of the All-Star team unveiling for the National League as they had five players named to the starting lineup by fan voting, including Kris Bryant over Arenado at third base and former Colorado outfielder Dexter Fowler with his first All-Star selection. In all, seven Cubs will be making the trip to Petco Park.

Things to know about CarGo…

Gonzalez became the sixth Rockies player to reach 1,000 hits as a Rockie (1,003) on June 29. He joined Todd Helton (2,519), Larry Walker (1,361), Dante Bichette (1,278) and Troy Tulowitzki (1,165).

Entering Tuesday, he is seven runs away from 600 as a Colorado player and 10 home runs away from 200 with the Rockies.

With his 189th home run on June 27 against Toronto, Gonzalez surpassed Tulowitzki for fifth place on the Colorado Rockies’ all-time home run list.

CarGo hit .364 in June, ranking tied for fourth in the National League. During that month, his eight home runs were tied for sixth, while his 29 RBI were second in the NL.

Since May 23, CarGo’s .384 average is first in the National League, good enough for second in the Majors. His 38 RBI are third in the Majors over that span and his 13 homers are tied for fourth in MLB since May 23.

Things to know about Nolan…

Arenado is tied for fourth in the Major Leagues and ranks tied for second in the National League with 22 home runs. He leads the NL and is tied for second in MLB with his 66 RBI.

This season, the third baseman has hit 12 home runs at Coors Field and 10 on the road, including six in NL West opponent ballparks.

Since the start of 2015, Arenado’s 196 RBI lead all MLB players by nine, and he has 30 more RBI than anyone in the National League during that span.

His 64 home runs since the beginning of 2015 are third in MLB and first in the National League.

His 134 extra-base hits also lead the Majors since the start of 2015.

For his career, Arenado has 53 home runs at Coors Field, 39 on the road.

Our take

MLB’s players got it right by pushing Arenado and Gonzalez into the All-Star Game. These were the two most deserving Rockies who were thriving at the right moment … during the voting period.

To us, it’s still crazy that Arenado will be coming off the bench, even if it behind the hot-hitting Bryant. There will come a day when Nolan is voted into the All-Star Game as a starter. It’s just not this season.
