Jon Gray and company falter late to drop pitching duel in South Beach 5-1 as the Colorado Rockies hitters no-showed against the Miami Marlins.

The Rockies didn’t have a runner in scoring position until two outs in the top of the sixth inning when Carlos Gonzalez broke up a no-hit bid by Miami’s Adam Conley with a double to right field. CarGo’s double yielded only the third runner of the night for the good guys.

Thankfully things unraveled for Miami and Conley after CarGo’s two-out double. After CarGo’s hit, Conley then intentionally walked Nolan Arenado to get to Trevor Story, but Story made Miami pay by managing a full-count walk. Conley then managed to hit batter Ryan Raburn for the game’s first run. Conley would leave the game after hitting Raburn, yielding in total only one hit.

Jon Gray matched Conley out for out for much the game. Heading into the the bottom of the sixth inning, Gray had given up only three hits. But much like his opponent Conley, Gray’s night unraveled in the sixth. Christian Yelich took advantage of belt high Gray change-up and lifted it over the right field fence for a two-run homer.

Miami would add three more runs off of Gonzalez Germen and Chad Qualls in the seventh when Martin Prado scored Ichiro Suzuki with a double to left, and Giancarlo Stanton laced a two-out, two-run single to center.

Stanton’s struggles this season has been well documented (Stanton has absolutely killed any hope for a certain Rockies’ blogger fantasy team), but of course he finds away to burn Colorado.

On a night when the Rockies were suppose to face Miami ace Jose Fernandez, the Rockies found themselves baffled by Adam Conley, and could only muster one hit. Gray did his best going six full innings, giving up six hits, two walks and striking out four.

This recent start gives Gray his fifth consecutive quality start. In the end, Gray gave his team a chance to win but the reality is no Colorado Rockies starter will ever with only one hit in support.
