Colorado Rockies Saturday Shout-Outs: Happy Labor Day!

The Colorado Rockies are in the middle of three straight four-game series against NL West opponents, and a stretch with very few off days. Woof.

The Colorado Rockies are about to spend Labor Day in San Diego, in kind of a weird scheduling quirk; instead of playing a night game Monday after a day game Sunday, the Rox (and most of the rest of baseball) get a Sunday day game, followed by a Monday day game.

It’d be one thing if the club were staying at home for it, but going on the road will be a little strange for the players’ body clocks, no doubt. Oh well. It doesn’t really matter at this point in the year. (And at least the Rockies are going west — and can gain an hour — rather than going east a couple hours with it, right?)

Also, do you say “Happy Labor Day” to people? Merry Labor Day? What’s the proper terminology?

Eh. Without further ado, Saturday shout-outs go to…

  • Chris Rusin, for throwing another complete game! This one wasn’t a shut out, but three runs on six hits in nine innings — where the homer he allowed to Ryan Vogelsong, the Giants’ pitcher, was really the only trouble he found — is more than a commendable outing.
  • Charlie Blackmon, who is getting lost in the CarGo/Nolan hype. Charlie is slashing .344/.373/.547 over his last two weeks, with 22 hits during that time period (!) and another five stolen bases. On a bad team, with several very good hitters who will overshadow him, Blackmon may be forgotten in the mix, but he shouldn’t, because he’s having the best year of his career.
  • Justin Morneau, for coming back from a long injury issue with concussion-related symptoms.
  • The Albuquerque Isotopes, for having a very strong season in attendance in their first year as the Colorado Rockies’ AAA affiliate.
  • The city of New Britain, Connecticut — it appears they will have a replacement franchise for the Rock Cats, who are leaving the city in favor of Hartford, where they will become the Yard Goats.
  • The Asheville Tourists, who are in the thick of a playoff race right now. At least there’s one Rockies club that’s enjoying some late-season fun!
  • The Modesto Nuts, who went literally right down to the wire on a playoff push. They didn’t make it, unfortunately, and were eliminated with just a few days left in the season, but this team is primarily comprised of guys who won the 2014 South Atlantic League championship in Asheville, so it’s good to see them competitive enough once again.
  • Ryan Freemyer for this post on what the Colorado Rockies are good at (spoiler: nothing).

Oh! One more thing. There is absolutely no need for me to shout-out Carlos Gonzalez and Nolan Arenado, because THE TWO OF THEM ARE RIDICULOUS AND IT’S SO MUCH FUN AND I WANT THIS HOT STREAK TO CONTINUE FOREVER SO DON’T JINX IT ANYBODY.

Ahem.

CarGone!
