The Arizona Diamondbacks held a two-run lead for most of the game, eventually scoring three more runs in the bottom of the eighth after a Colorado Rockies’ rally, and defeated the visiting Rockies 7-3 on Saturday night, the beneficiaries of two Rockies’ errors in a game that now pushes Colorado to 34-47 on the season.
The Diamondbacks started the fun in the bottom of the first inning off Rockies’ starter David Hale with a Yasmany Tomas RBI groundout, followed by an RBI single from Jake Lamb to make the game 2-0.
The Rockies scored two runs to answer in the top of the third, after Charlie Blackmon doubled home Brandon Barnes off Dbacks’ starter Patrick Corbin, and then DJ LeMahieu singled home Blackmon to tie the game 2-2.
The tie was short lived for the Rockies, though; the Dbacks scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Nick Ahmed doubled home two runs, giving the Dbacks a 4-2 lead.
The two run lead held most of the game, with Hale leaving after five innings, having allowed five hits and three walks — and four runs (three earned) — with four strikeouts on 104 strikes, 57 pitches. Hale took the loss, though, making his season record 2-4 with a 5.89 ERA. Corbin, pitching in his first big league game in two years after recovering from Tommy John Surgery, won after allowing two runs in five innings with no walks and three strikeouts.
The Rockies were able to get a run back in the eighth inning after Wilin Rosario grounded out to drive in LeMahieu, making the game 4-3.
That’s as close as the Colorado Rockies would get, though; the Dbacks scored three runs in the eighth — with only one earned — thanks to a key throwing error by Rosario, making the game 7-3.
LeMahieu and Blackmon combined to go 5-for-8 with two runs and two RBIs, but other than them, the Rockies didn’t offer much in the way of offense yet again, turning their road trip record to a dismal 2-7 with one game remaining on Sunday afternoon.
The Diamondbacks are now once again one game within a .500 record; they were at that point in Colorado when the Rockies won a game to push them back down below .500 on the year last week.
Jorge De La Rosa throws for the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, attempting to salvage one game in this four game series.
