Colorado has a really good problem right now—one that's a far cry from years past. While they may not have top-tier talent, they've got guys who can plug in just about anywhere on the diamond.
Ryan Ritter is one of those guys, and he's been putting on a show at the dish during spring training.
Ritter made his MLB debut on June 6th last season, collecting a triple off Kodai Senga in his welcome-to-the-league moment. He slashed .241/.296/.337 with nine doubles and three triples in 60 games, playing primarily second base.
Colorado signed Willi Castro this offseason for his versatility—he can play second base, third base, shortstop, and even the corner outfield positions when needed.
Rockies skipper Warren Schaeffer has embraced that philosophy, moving Ritter around the diamond this spring. So far, Ritter has played second base, third base, shortstop, and even left field.
Ritter had another impressive day at the plate in Colorado's 10-8 loss to Milwaukee on Thursday afternoon, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. His performance raised his average to .478.
Colorado also got Tyler Freeman back in that game. He made his spring debut after dealing with a back injury and gives the team another versatile option at second base and right field.
With Kyle Karros likely locking down third base every day, Colorado has several players competing for either a starting position or utility role.
After all, this is a pretty good problem for Colorado to have. Whether it's a starting position or utility role, Ritter is certainly making his case to join the team in Miami when the season opens later this month.
