The Toronto Blue Jays have already acquired starting pitcher Jose Berrios from the Minnesota Twins for SS/OF Austin Martin and RHP Simeon Woods Richardson. Both of them are in MLB.com’s Top 100 prospect list, as Martin is #16 overall and Richardson is #68 overall. That is a huge amount to trade (and arguably, an overpay).

Along with the trade of closer Brad Hand and others, including former Colorado Rockies outfielder Corey Dickerson, the Toronto Blue Jays will be one of the most improved teams at the trade deadline.

But the Colorado Rockies could help them put their team over the top and help the Blue Jays win the trade deadline by making one move.

The Toronto Blue Jays need to acquire shortstop Trevor Story from the Colorado Rockies

More from Rox Pile

Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story is not a perfect fit for the Toronto Blue Jays as they already have Bo Bichette (son of Blake Street Bomber Dante Bichette) as their everyday shortstop. He has been one of their best offensive players so they aren’t going to bench him.

However, Story could play third base for the Blue Jays. The Toronto Blue Jays have had Cavan Biggio (son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, who nearly was a Colorado Rockie) at third base and he has struggled all season. He is hitting .221/.318/.358 on the season with an OPS+ of 86.

Even more alarming, Biggio has hit .175/.222/.263 in the month of July. That’s part of the reason why Biggio has seen his playing time shrink. With three minor league options, they could even option him to the minors if they want.

The Blue Jays definitely have interest in Trevor Story but there are conflicting reports on whether or not there’s traction for a deal with the Rockies and Blue Jays.

If they trade for Trevor Story, though, they would be acquiring someone that could make them the winners of the trade deadline. In addition, Story would bring the Toronto Blue Jays a veteran presence in their lineup, as the Blue Jays are the youngest team on offense in the entire sport.

It should be noted too that the Toronto Blue Jays front office is a front office that the Rockies are familiar with. The Blue Jays CEO is Mark Shapiro, who was in the Indians front office with Rockies GM Bill Schmidt in the late 1990s. The Blue Jays GM, Ross Atkins, was drafted by the Indians in 1995, when Schmidt was the head scout for the Indians so there is a long-standing relationship there.

The Toronto Blue Jays could make their playoff chances even better if they acquire Trevor Story from the Rockies and make themselves a huge threat both in the AL East and the entire sport in 2021.
