Colorado Rockies: Scott Oberg suffers setback in return from IL

Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black reported on Saturday that reliever Scott Oberg has suffered a setback in his return from the injured list.

After the Colorado Rockies posted a 6-1 victory over the San Diego Padres to even up the series at one game apiece, Rockies manager Bud Black spoke with the media, including Rox Pile, after the game and he gave an update on reliever Scott Oberg.

Oberg, 30, had a throwing session before today’s game at Coors Field and it was cut short due to discomfort in his throwing hand. When he was experiencing the discomfort, he was met by Black, pitching coach Steve Foster, head athletic trainer Keith Dugger, and assistant rehabilitation coordinator/athletic trainer Scott Murayama.

When Black spoke to the media after the game, he said that Oberg felt discomfort in his hand and was having a “hard time gripping the ball.” He said that Oberg will be shut him down for the time being while he’s getting evaluated. Black added that “[i]t was a little bit out of character for how he has been progressing.”

Oberg is currently in the injured list with a “lower back strain” and further tests were in the works for Oberg on what slowed him on Saturday.

Oberg missed the final six weeks of the season or so due to blood clots in his arm, which has been a recurring issue for Oberg in his career. For this instance, he had to have a procedure to relieve the clots in St. Louis, as he had before when he had blood clots. Oberg is also known to have psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and Berger’s disease, which is a disease that cause damage to filters inside of the kidneys.

With Wade Davis struggling thus far to start the season as Rockies closer, the closer situation has become much more unclear in the last 24 hours. It should be noted that while the Rockies were ahead in the ninth by a score of 6-1, when Tyler Kinley was having some command issues, the Rockies were warming up Carlos Estevez in the bullpen, seeming to indicate that Davis was not available for a possible save situation.
