Before Saturday’s night game against the Cincinnati Reds in Cincinnati, the Colorado Rockies have recalled starting pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez from Triple-A Albuquerque.

The Colorado Rockies have announced that they have recalled starting pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez from Triple-A Albuquerque. In a corresponding move, the Rockies have optioned Jeff Hoffman back to Albuquerque.

Gonzalez has been a frequent guest on the shuttle between the Rockies and Isotopes as this is the third time he has been recalled since June 25. Gonzalez hasn’t started since July 20 for Albuquerque, in which he went six innings, allowing 12 hits and six earned runs.

More from Rox Pile

Overall in 2019 for the Isotopes, he has pitched to a 4-5 record with a 6.10 ERA in 16 games (15 starts). He has pitched to a 5.14 ERA in three starts (14 innings) for the Rockies, with the most recent start being on July 15, when he started the second game of the Rockies double header against the Giants.

Hoffman, 26, has pitched to a 1-3 record with a 6.57 ERA with the Rockies at the major level this year in eight starts.

However, in his past three starts, he has pitched to a 3.55 ERA. Opponents only hit .217 against him in those three starts but he walked 10 batters in those 12 2/3 innings.

In 11 starts in Albuquerque this year, he has gone 6-5 with a 7.32 ERA in the very hitter friendly Pacific Coast League. He has allowed an average of 10.6 hits, 1.9 home runs, 3.3 walks, and 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings there this season.

The Isotopes themselves have a traditional double-header today after their game last night against the Salt Lake Bees was postponed due to rain and lightning. In the second game of the double header, they will play as the Albuquerque Green Chile Cheeseburgers (yes, you read that correctly).

With the lack of depth that the Rockies have at the starting pitching position, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hoffman again in the major leagues in the very near future for the Rockies.
