According to the Colorado Rockies Twitter page, they have activated shortstop Trevor Story from the 10-day injured list.

The Colorado Rockies have announced that they have activated shortstop Trevor Story (right thumb sprain) from the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, they have optioned right-handed pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez back to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Story, 26, was having a really good season for the Rockies before his thumb injury, which he sustained while sliding head first into second base on June 19 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In fact, while he was on the 10-day injured list, he was named to the 2019 All-Star Game that will be played in Cleveland next week for the National League.

He’s currently hitting .294/.360/.547 with 17 home runs and 48 RBI. Just before his injury, he had heated up a lot in the past month or so, as in his last 26 games before hitting the injured list, he was hitting .346/.417/.645 with six home runs, 17 RBI, 12 doubles, 36 hits, and 27 runs.

As for Gonzalez, 27, he was recalled from Albuquerque just last week as he was called up for two starts for the Rockies, due to Jeff Hoffman being sent back to Albuquerque. He also made his return to the majors for the first time since 2016.

The Rockies needed him as Tyler Anderson has been on the injured list for much of the season and Kyle Freeland‘s massive struggles, that have still continued at a clip that has even been worse in the PCL.

In his two starts, Gonzalez pitched to a 6.00 ERA in a total of nine innings, allowing 11 hits, six runs (all earned), and six walks while having six strikeouts.

With the off day on Monday, an off day on Thursday, and the All-Star break next week, the Rockies really don’t need a fifth starter until after break so it’s not that surprising of a move. For the remaining games before the break, German Marquez will start tonight and likely Sunday with Peter Lambert, Antonio Senzatela, and Jon Gray starting on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.

After the break, the Rockies will next need a fifth starter on Monday, July 15th as the Rockies will have a double-header against the Giants at Coors Field.
