Prior to Thursday’s day game with the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix, Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a thumb injury.
The Colorado Rockies suffered a big blow to their offense on Thursday as shortstop Trevor Story was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a thumb injury.
In a corresponding move, infielder Brendan Rodgers was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Rockies manager Bud Black talked with the media extensively, including Mark Brown of FanCred Sports, before the game and divulged some more on Story’s injury.
He said that they would not know exactly how long or the severity of the injury to Story is until after today’s game as he is currently seeing a hand specialist in Phoenix to get some images and scans on his thumb.

Black said that the doctors after last night’s diagnosed him with a “sprain of some degree” and the Rockies medical department said that this “would not be a two or three day thing.”
Black also said that, as an organization, they prefer player’s sliding feet first because it is “way safer” than head first, as the possibility of injuries like this happen more with head first slides. He also made a point to say that it is important to know how to do both slides but he, and the Rockies as a whole, prefer the feet first slide.
That is why he was placed on the 10-day injured list but the amount of time that Story will miss will be determined later today after the game.
In today’s starting lineup, the Rockies have Pat Valaika at shortstop and playing shortstop.
Story’s bat will be missed as he leads the Rockies in WAR (3.2), second in home runs (17) only to Nolan Arenado, 2nd in RBI (48), and 1st in stolen bases (12). He has an offensive slash line of .294/.360/.547 with an OPS+ of 117.

UPDATE (6:15 PM M.T.): Bud Black talked to the media postgame and per Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post on Twitter, Story’s thumb injury is just a sprain and no surgery will be needed. Per Taylor McGregor of AT&T Sports Net Rocky Mountain on Twitter, Story will likely be out a few weeks.
