Colorado Rockies: They need a lot more taco’s in 2019

On Monday, the Colorado Rockies scored 12 runs against the Kansas City Royals in their third spring training game of the season.

Like most early spring training games, this was an uneventful game as most of the players got in their one or two innings of work in before hitting the showers. However, there was one thing that got me excited about a baseball game in February: taco’s!!! (yes, i said taco’s, not tacos).

For those who are unaware, Taco Bell runs a promotion during the Rockies’ regular season where every time the Rockies score seven or more runs in a game, the following day tacos are sold at a discounted price at participating Taco Bell locations.

Even though Monday’s game didn’t count towards the Taco’s promotion, the game got me to look into one of my favorite stats: The Rockies’ record in games in which they score 7 or more runs.  Here are the Rockies’ record for past 10 seasons:

  • ’18  34 games   26-8 (.764)
  • ’17  47 games   45-2 (.975)
  • ’16  50 games   40-10 (.800)
  • ’15  36 games   24-12 (.667)
  • ’14  44 games   37-7 (.841)
  • ’13  42 games   38-4 (.905)
  • ’12  40 games   29-11 (.725)
  • ’11  38 games   32-6 (.842)
  • ’10  40 games   31-9 (.775)
  • ’09  43 games   40-3 (.930)
  • Total: 414 games  342-72 (.826)

What sticks out about these records is that even though the Rockies won 91 games last season, they scored 7 or more runs the least amount of times and had the third lowest winning percentage in the past 10 seasons.

The high win total despite these low numbers is another example of just how good the Rockies’ pitching was last season.  It is also another reason why hitting coach Duane Espy was replaced by Dave Magadan in the off season after the Rockies had their worst team batting average in franchise history.

If the Rockies want to win their first ever NL West Championship or a third straight Wild Card birth, they will need to deliver taco’s to the fans at a faster rate this season.  With a winning percentage of over .800 when the Rockies score 7 or more runs that last 10 seasons, Taco’s have become synonymous with winning in Denver.

So once again, who wants taco’s?!
