On Monday’s deflating 8-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers which also relinquished first place in the NL West to the Dodgers, it was the definition of a nightmare for the Colorado Rockies. Jon Gray imploded early (how many times have you heard that in the past calendar year) but perhaps, the biggest thing could be the potential injury to the Rockies star shortstop Trevor Story.

Rockies All Star shortstop Trevor Story left Monday’s game with what was called “elbow soreness” in the sixth inning.

After the game, Story spoke with the media there at Dodger Stadium on how the injury occurred (h/t the Rockies PR team).

“[I] dove for the ball [in the first inning and my] elbow [became] a little tight. I just tried to play through it [but] when I swung through that pitch [in the fourth inning that] extended my arm, I felt it a little more. [Coming out of the game was] just being cautious. We’ll find out more about it tomorrow.”

He also said that he felt the pain in his elbow once he threw the ball to first base and not the dive. He added that he feels pain in elbow when he extends his arm and when he throws but not while resting it.

He also added that he did not want to come out of the game but it was decided that he should.

“It’s tough, man. It’s unfortunate [and] frustrating for me. You never want to come out of the game, especially a game like this [and] such a huge series.”

Bud Black also spoke about the injury and he said that the Rockies trainers “feel good” about the preliminary testing. More testing will come today.

So it sounds like the injury isn’t too serious but either way, I would assume that Story, since he will be going under further tests to see what is going on with his right elbow, will not be in the lineup tonight.

If that is the case, the Rockies lineup would be even more weakened as they have been virtually dormant on their current road trip. On the trip (four games), they are only averaging 5.5 hits per game with a total of five runs. They are also hitting .177/.243/.210. In addition, they are facing Clayton Kershaw tonight so it’s not like they are on a cake walk to begin with.

Even if only for a game or two, Trevor Story’s absence from the lineup could prove to be huge in this series and for the divisional standings if the Rockies continue to falter under pressure in this, perhaps, the biggest series of their season thus far.
