Colorado Rockies reliever Mike Dunn confirmed on Monday morning to Rox Pile and other media members inside the Rockies clubhouse that his season is officially over.

The Colorado Rockies southpaw has dealing with an issue with his left AC joint since tweaking it in spring training. After trying to battle through it and cortisone shots, Dunn is now facing surgery. When we talked to him during Colorado’s trip to Seattle in July, he expressed his frustration at the injury costing him time on the disabled list. Now, that injury will cost him the rest of the 2018 campaign.

"“Things didn’t go well. I had a couple of setbacks. After my second outing, I had to get a cortisone injection. That didn’t hold up either so I’m shutting it down for the season. The next option is pretty much surgery,” Dunn said. “After my last outing and the pain I went through, I woke up the next day and I was at ease with it (knowing that his season was over). I tried to push through it. I tried to come back.”"

Dunn said after surgery is a six- to eight-week rehab process. With the surgery likely coming before the end of the regular season, that would put Dunn back to start throwing around the start of December, the time of year he says he often starts his regimen anyway.

He said he expects to be ready for spring training next season.

"“It’s disappointing that I’m not going to be able to be back this year but ultimately I know I gave it everything I could to be back. It just didn’t hold up,” Dunn said. “I’ve never had to go anything like this. I’ve been blessed in my career to be healthy for 98 percent of it. It’s tough. I’ve never had any surgery of any kind before.”"

Dunn spent two different stints on the disabled list for the Rockies this season and has been shelved three times in his two-year Colorado career. He was transferred from the 60-day DL to the 10-day DL on July 27 and went to Triple-A Albuquerque on August 21 for a rehab assignment. He pitched in four games during that time with the Isotopes, throwing a total of 3.2 innings.

The 33-year-old will finish his 2018 season with the Rockies with a 9.00 ERA in 17.0 innings spanning 25 games. He last pitched for Colorado on July 3.

Dunn was signed by the Rockies on December 15, 2016, to a three-year, $19 million contract. In his two seasons with Colorado, he has appeared in 93 games, posting a cumulative 5.61 ERA in 67.1 innings.
