Colorado Rockies trade proposal: Another trade with the Toronto Blue Jays

The Colorado Rockies made one trade before the trade deadline and that was with the Toronto Blue Jays for reliever Seunghwan Oh. Some people are hoping that they should make another trade and if that does happen, they should work with the Blue Jays again.

After finally heating up a bit after his disastrous start to the 2018 season, Ian Desmond is, yet again, struggling. In his last 15 games, the Colorado Rockies first baseman/outfielder is 8-for-48 with only one double and one triple along with no home runs or RBI (and 14 strikeouts).

With it being halfway through the month of August, Jeff Bridich and company need to decide whether or not they need to address first base (or anything else for that matter) in the next two weeks or so.

One player that they really should consider is Toronto’s first baseman, Justin Smoak. Smoak was an All-Star for the first time last season and this year, he has also had an excellent season. He has 32 doubles, 18 home runs, and a .257/.365/.471 slash line with an OPS+ of 129, which is 44 percent better than Ian Desmond‘s offensive production.

He has also shown to be a defender as Smoak has 1 Defensive Run Saved compared to Desmond’s -5.

He would be a cheap option for the Rockies in more ways than one as he is a potential free agent at the end of the season. Entering Thursday, he is owed about $916k for the rest of the season. In addition, Smoak has a team option for next season that will be worth about $8 million, depending on the number of plate appearances that he has between last year and this year.

With that, the Rockies wouldn’t be able to trade him for a bucket of baseballs but the Blue Jays should not be asking for any of the Rockies top prospects (e.g Brendan Rodgers, Peter Lambert, Colton Welker, or Garrett Hampson) for Smoak.

If the Rockies were to acquire him, he would provide the Rockies an upgrade at first base but also provide themselves with a little bit of depth on the bench as Ian Desmond would likely move to the bench.

Since he can play first base and the outfield (and, technically, shortstop in a pinch), he could add some versatility to the bench while Smoak would upgrade first base, which is something the Rockies really need to consider doing.
