A big announcement came down on Friday that Denver’s LoDo district will be transforming in the near future to give Colorado Rockies fans a new experience before and after attending games at Coors Field.

In partnership with the Rockies, Stantec announced their plans to create a “stadium district” out of the parking lot at 19th and Wazee. Within that space will be a hotel, outdoor gathering area and plenty of spaces for residential and restaurant options. A completion date for the project was not announced. You can see some of the eye-popping photos and more information by clicking here.

However, most intriguing to us in the announcement is that the space will also contain a Colorado Rockies Hall of Fame. This will give the club the option to honor some of the players, coaches and administrators who have impacted the team since its inception 25 years ago.

When I first heard this announcement, my first thought was which players might be included in the inaugural class inducted into this new Hall of Fame. There have been plenty of players who have played with the Rockies who have made a major impact but have not received any kind of national recognition from Baseball Hall of Fame voters.

Certainly Larry Walker will be included in the first class. The most recent player to win consecutive National League batting titles, Walker has the highest WAR of any career right fielder who has not been inducted into Cooperstown. Only 10 right fielders have a higher WAR than Walker and all 10 have been inducted into baseball’s highest honor.

It is very likely that Walker’s fellow Blake Street Bombers will be in the new Hall of Fame as well. Dante Bichette, Andres Galarraga, Ellis Burks and Vinny Castilla should also be among early inductions.

Todd Helton will make an early appearance in the Rockies Hall as well. So should Don Baylor, the first manager of the Rockies who recently passed away after a battle with cancer.
