When FanSided, the parent company of Rox Pile, came out with its most recent Fandom 250, ranking the best fan bases across sports and entertainment, 11 Major League Baseball fan bases made the list. The Colorado Rockies were not one of them.

Ranking fan bases who were the most passionate about their teams or superstars they follow (yes, this is a list where Taylor Swift and the Dallas Cowboys can co-mingle), FanSided picked the top 250. Included in the Fandom 250 list were the Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees. Colorado joins their fellow National League West teams in San Diego and Arizona as not being represented.

As a side note, yes, the Denver Broncos were included in the Fandom 250 last year and will likely be on the list again this year.

So what do the MLB teams on the list have that the Rockies don’t? Well, one could argue a history of winning, but that would slice off the Cubs, Indians, Red Sox and Astros until recent years. One could argue large versus small markets, but St. Louis and Kansas City aren’t considered big markets. One could even argue coastal bias but there are teams in the Midwest represented.

To me, it boils down to a perceived lack of passion among Rockies fans that I personally know to not be true. Log on to Rockies Twitter at any time and you can see how people care about the Rockies (especially after Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon were left out of the National League Most Valuable Player top three). Log on during or after any Rockies game and you can see plenty of passionate discussion about the team.

We have asked before if Denver is ever really going to be a “baseball town.” While the Broncos may dominate sports media outlets in the city (even in a down season such as this one), there are still plenty of Rockies fans out there who deeply care about their team and see the upward trajectory ahead of it.

Rockies fans may not get the national attention for their passion, but we know how much you support and value this team. We will be right there with you on Rockies Twitter and at Coors Field, watching every amazing play and continuing to believe that, sadly, the Rockies are one of the best-kept secrets in Major League Baseball.
