After defeating the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in a best-of-five series, the Lancaster JetHawks, the high-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, advanced to the California League Championship Series against the Modesto Nuts, the high-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. On Monday night, game one was held at The Hanger, the home of the JetHawks.

2017 is the first season the Lancaster JetHawks are affiliate with the Colorado Rockies. In the past, the Rockies had their high-A affiliate in Modesto. It seems somewhat fitting that the 2017 championship series would pit the Rockies affiliate of old with the Rockies affiliate of now.

Game one saw Peter Lambert, a decent pitching prospect with a 9-8 record and 4.17 ERA, get the ball for the JetHawks. After a quick 1-2-3 first inning, Lambert began to struggle.

In the second, he gave up back-to-back-to-back doubles to give the Nuts a 2-0 lead. A two-run shot later in the inning gave the Nuts a four run cushion. Another solo shot in the top of the fourth gave the Nuts yet another insurance run.

The fifth and sixth innings are when the Nuts really broke the game open. They scored two in the fifth and six in the sixth to take a commanding 13-0 lead in the game. Nathan Bannister, the starting pitcher for the Nuts, only gave up five hits and no runs in six innings of work.

The JetHawks showed their only sign of life in the bottom of the ninth. They hit around against the Nuts pitching for six runs, but still fell 13-6. Roberto Ramos finished the game 2-3 with a walk, while Sam Hilliard had only one hit all night, but it was a three-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth.

The JetHawks will look to tie the series up tonight when they send Brandon Gold (4-3, 4.40 ERA) to the mound to face off against Spencer Hermann (4-6, 3.53 ERA). Tonight’s game will be in Lancaster before the series shifts to Modesto on Friday for the last three games, if necessary.
