Colorado Rockies: Roster moves aplenty with September roster expansion

As we talked about yesterday in this article, the Colorado Rockies, along with the rest of MLB, will be seeing some minor league call-ups with rosters expanding from 25 to 40.
With September roster expansion, it is no surprise to see the Rockies make a flurry of moves to provide some depth. According to the Rockies PR Department, the Rockies have recalled three pitchers and three position players.
On the pitching front, relievers Carlos Estevez and Zac Rosscup have been recalled and starter Jeff Hoffman has also been recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque. Of the position players, catcher Tom Murphy, infielder Ryan McMahon, and outfielder Mike Tauchman have all been recalled from Albuquerque.
If you happened to read the article from yesterday about September call-ups that’s linked above (or even if you didn’t and just have followed the Rockies), none of these moves should be surprising. Each of the six players have spent time with the Rockies this year.
Hoffman has spent the most time with the Rockies this year as he made three appearances with the team in May and he also was on the team from June 4 through August 17.
With the moves, the Rockies roster is at 31 to start their three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks called up five players (three pitchers, a catcher, and a utility guy), according the Arizona Republic, so their roster will be at 30 players tonight.

Final Thoughts
As we mentioned in the article from yesterday, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Rockies make a few more moves once the minor league season is completed on Sunday. Both the Triple-A and Double-A seasons will be complete (as neither is going to qualify for the playoffs) so there will be more players to come up soon.
One that will certainly see some time is Raimel Tapia. Since he was just sent back to Albuquerque on Monday, regularly, he would need to spend ten days in the minor leagues before being recalled. However, since the season ends on Monday, the rules state that he could be recalled then.

Most teams, however, don’t use all 40 spots (because you really never need that many players and there’s usually not that many players ready for the majors yet). I don’t think that the Rockies will be any exception. I believe that we will see a few more additions but I don’t think that they will go over 35 players.
