With the conclusion of the World Baseball Classic, the Colorado Rockies are all accounted for once again at Spring Training. Here is what you should know on March 23rd.
Kyle Freeland Solidifies Rotation Spot
It’s not official news but in this writer’s mind, Kyle Freeland has solidified his spot in the rotation. On Wednesday during Colorado’s big win over Cleveland, Freeland gave up a first inning run, but was locked in after that. Making adjustments during the flow of the game is what makes the difference for young pitchers.
In total, Freeland went five innings, allowing four hits and striking out five Indian batters. Cleveland’s lineup featured position players that will be in their Opening Day lineup, so Freeland’s outing is that much more impressive.

In all, Freeland has pitched 16 innings this Spring with an outstanding 1.00 WHIP, 2.25 ERA, and 14 strikeouts. When Freeland breaks camp, expect a few growing pains but Freeland is primed for the major league squad. He doesn’t look bad with the bat either. Freeland smoked a line drive two-run single on Wednesday afternoon.
Position Players are Ready
In Wednesday’s action, several position players appear to be in perfect form. Leading the way was Trevor Story, who collected two doubles on the afternoon. Following the spirit, Carlos Gonzalez added two hits, including a double of his own. Just for good measure, Charlie Blackmon launched a two-run homer in the Rockies manhandling of the defending AL Pennant winners. The Rockies core, and fans alike are itching for the regular season to get underway.
He’s Back!!!
By the looks of the Celebration, he probably doesn’t feel great today, but Nolan Arenado will rejoin the Rockies in Scottsdale. In case you’re living under a rock, Nolan was USA’s clean-up hitter in the World Baseball Classic. In sum, Nolan really didn’t play very well. Before collecting two hits in last night’s Classic championship game, Arenado had struck out in seven consecutive at-bats.

Arenado would be the first to tell that that span was one of the most frustrating slumps of his career. But, now he can relax and get back into the flow of the Rockies clubhouse.
