When news broke on Tuesday afternoon that Colorado Rockies rookie sensation Trevor Story would miss the rest of the season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb, reaction in the Rockies clubhouse was one of shock and resiliency.

Certainly Story’s injury will impact the Rockies in the remaining weeks of the regular season. Daniel Descalso, Cristhian Adames, and Rafael Ynoa will fill in for Story. Descalso drew the start in Tuesday night’s series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers and should garner the most time at the position in Story’s absence.

Story, Nolan Arenado, Colorado manager Walt Weiss, and Colorado general manager Jeff Bridich all talked about the injury on Tuesday afternoon. Here are their thoughts.

Story

On his overall feelings…

“I’m just very disappointed. Very frustrated. Just the timing of it all is the worst. I think that is the worst part of it. It’s very disappointing.”

On if he suspected it could be a bad injury…

“Not really at first. I jammed it there, sliding into second. That’s what I thought it was … a jammed thumb. I kind of did some therapy on it. I was optimistic about it today but … I plan to have surgery in the next few days hopefully. Something like this, it’s a more successful surgery when you do it right after the injury.”

Is there a possibility of coming back this season?

“Usually recovery time is around eight weeks. I think that puts me out for the rest of the regular season. We’ll see.”

Is this harder for you the way you’ve been playing or the team the way it’s been playing?

“Really, I just feel terrible that I won’t be able to play every day. Just being out there, I mean a lot to the team. Just not to be out there, it hurts.”

Colorado manager Walt Weiss

On his overall feelings…

“I feel bad for Trevor because he was doing some really special things. Some historical things. We’ll be okay as a club. We’ll mix and match and we’ll do our thing. I talk to our club all the time that the fact that, over the course of seven months, you’re going to be challenged in a variety of ways. Those challenges show up in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it’s an injury that’s what we’re dealing with. We’re playing well. We need to continue to do that and I think we will. I feel bad for Trevor just because of how unique and special his rookie season has been.”

On when he knew it was a bad injury…

“I think we were all hopeful when the X-rays came back negative. You look at that as a very positive sign but you never know. Hands, fingers, wrists, those type of injuries are tricky. I was not totally surprised when the MRI came back. Trevor’s a tough kid and he’s gonna shake off any casual injury and he was hurt. That was certainly a red flag.”

Who takes over for Story?

“We have three guys (Descalso, Adames and Ynoa) that are very versatile so they’re going to share some time. We have Danny (Descalso) in there tonight, swinging the bat well against right-handed pitching. Certainly provides some offense. We have the pieces to mix and match and that is certainly what I’ll do.”
