Tyler Chatwood looked good in his second start of spring training this afternoon against the Seattle Mariners. Chatwood last pitched for the Colorado Rockies in April of 2014 before having his second Tommy John surgery. During the off-season, Chatwood threw about 60 innings at the Rockies new training facility located in the Dominican Republic. Remaining active in the Colorado clubhouse and the off-season conditioning has Tyler’€™s confidence soaring coming into spring training this year.

Taking the mound today against the Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, Chatwood had a one, two, three first inning throwing only ten pitches. After being challenged by a few ground balls in the infield, Tyler showed off his athleticism by easily throwing out the runners at first base. His fastball location was good and the velocity was sitting right back at 90 to 92 mph.
To begin the second inning for Colorado, Chatwood issued his first walk of the day allowing Seattle their first base runner. Tyler quickly erased that walk by inducing a ground ball 3-6-3 double play. With a fly ball out to right field, Chatwood worked quickly thorough the second, throwing only 20 pitches during the first two innings.
Tyler Chatwood began his last inning of the day by efficiently inducing two quick outs. Tyler issued his second walk of the game before quickly ending his day by producing his seventh ground ball out. Eddie Butler came in to pitch the fourth inning while Chatwood went and threw 10 to 12 more pitches in the bullpen to get his work in for the day.
Even though his fastball command was spotty at times, I thought Tyler Chatwood had a very impressive outing today. His athleticism and ability to get ground ball outs will be something the Rockies really need in their rotation this year as the club tries to improve it’€™s starting five. Working hard during the off-season has paid off so far for Chatwood who is competing for a starting role. Tyler’€™s next start is in five days and he hopes to pitch about four innings and throw 50 to 60 pitches.
