Let’s Meet The Padres

The San Diego Padres are obviously out of the playoff race — though, as little as they wanted to admit it, they’ve been out of it for well over a month — but no longer are they playing for anything of importance this year.

Part of that means Robbie Erlin’s start on Saturday night, as the club goes for younger starters to audition for 2016, just like the Colorado Rockies are doing. So neither team is playing for much at this point. (I suppose the Padres are playing to not finish in fourth place in the NL West? Whoopty-doo.)

Here are some Padres news and notes:

How bad is the Padres’ bad season? (Friars on Base).
The Padres had a pretty disappointing year, especially considering how many moves they made this winter and how high the expectations were going in to Spring Training. Oops. You live, and you learn, right AJ Preller?

Cody Decker called up to the Padres (Friars on Base).
Cody Decker is an interesting cat. He makes film (they call people like that “filmmakers”), and now he’s a Major Leaguer. He’s also prolific on Twitter. Who knows how much he’ll help the Padres, but at least this is a cool thing for him and a big thing for the Baseball Internet.

Josh Johnson needs a third Tommy John Surgery (ESPN.com).
Good god. Poor Josh Johnson, who after diligently working his way back from his second elbow surgery, he’s now on his third in a situation now finding that his career may be over. We’ll see if he can ever come back, but it probably won’t be with the Padres. Gotta feel for the guy.
