Prepare For A Re-Build

Look, I can’t say this enough — prepare to lose. You guys should almost want to lose. As long as that losing means it’s being done by young players who are trying to get their feet wet before next season. (Let’s face it, the Rockies will lose anyways this year, veterans or youth, so why not go youth movement?)

The rebuild (whether or not Bridich and Weiss want to call it that) is going to take more than the next two months — and the Rockies might be pretty bad again next year barring something unforeseen happening — but at least a rebuild has an end to it (hopefully) and would prove the Rockies have a plan.

We’ll be running a poll post tomorrow asking you guys why, exactly, you’re going to continue watching the Rockies this summer, but we can start with it now: watch it for guys like Gray, Oberg, Butler, Paulsen, and Arenado (of course). Watch it for guys like Jeff Hoffman, Miguel Castro, David Dahl, and others who might be long-shots to get a September call-up, but hey, maybe it’ll happen.

Whatever you do, don’t watch the Rockies hoping to win games, because that doesn’t matter. It doesn’t mean they won’t compete, and it doesn’t mean they couldn’t spoil some things for playoff teams the next few weeks, but the Rockies’ focus ought to be player development for the next two months. Prepare to see an audition process take place in Denver.

Depending on how those auditions go, you might be able to catch just the faintest showings of an actual front office plan by the start of October and the beginning of offseason moves. Wouldn’t that be something!
