One to watch (Sam Thoele): Truth be told, I’m not actually sure if Sam Thoele is trending up or down or sideways or… well, he’s got some weird stats, so he’s here as our “One To Watch.”

He’s saved all three opportunities he’s been given, which is great, and he has 15 strikeouts in just nine innings, which is really great.

But he’s also walked six batters and hit four more in those nine innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) across his first  nine professional baseball appearances. So… that’s weird? Obviously, his stuff is good enough to miss both hitters’ bats and the strike zone.

For what it’s worth, though, he’s had seven very good outings in pro baseball (scoreless innings), and two very bad ones; one on June 20 where he allowed three runs in an inning, and the other July 10 where he allowed four runs in an inning.

If the 14th Round pick from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock develops a little consistency around his bat-missing stuff, the Colorado Rockies might have themselves a nice little low-round low-risk reliever coming up from the 2015 draft one day.

Quick hits: Top 2015 draft picks Brendan Rodgers and Tyler Nevin are each doing well in their professional debuts, with Rodgers (.275) and Nevin (.295) hitting well enough considering they are each only 18 years old and in pro baseball for the first time … Top 2015 draft picks Peter Lambert and Mike Nikorak are being brought along more slowly on the mound. Combined, they’ve only thrown 9.2 innings across three games this season, but they’ve only walked one hitter and allowed two earned runs between them … Hunter Brothers is apparently taking after his older brother — the reliever has 23 strikeouts in 21 innings, but he’s also walked 11 hitters and hit two more batters … Brothers is also second in the Pioneer League in games pitched … Sam Hilliard is 8th in the Pioneer League in batting, slashing .344/.421/.591 in 93 at-bats.
