Checking In With Rockies’ Prospect Trevor Story

Trevor Story is making a name for himself moving up in the Colorado Rockies organization. Just how good he can be is the question.

October is coming to an end and the World Series champions have been crowned at last. The only boys of summer that remain are the boys of the Arizona Fall League. Here’s a quick glance into the Colorado Rockies star prospect Trevor Story.

Out of Irving High School in Irving, Texas. Story was selected in the first round, 45th overall in the 2011 Compensation draft. Shortly after, at age 18, he signed for $915,000 and set off for the Pioneer League and the Casper Rockies, the Rookie team affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Story showcased his talents right away by stroking a .268 avg. with 6 home runs and 8 doubles, racking up 28 RBI in just 179 at-bats. That’s not to mention his 13 for 14 in steal attempts in that short span. The only real flaw in his game was his fielding. Story was described as having a rocket for an arm but limited range. The SS/3B managed to commit 15 errors in his first professional season.

The 2012 season showed decent improvement as Story played the entire year with the Single A club Asheville Tourists. He bolstered his numbers to a .277 average and, more impressively, 43 doubles. Showing his ability to stay patient, Story walked 60 times during the year. All the numbers, adding up to being named, South Atlantic League Post Season All Star for the Tourists.

In 2013 with the High Single Affiliate the Modesto Nuts, Story’s numbers seemed to level off slightly, as he only posted a .232 average. Being as that may, Story did have a very good season on the base paths as he swiped 23 out of 24 stolen bases. His fielding still needed to be worked on but wasn’t terrible with a .957 fielding percentage in 125 games at SS.

So far, Story’s best year to date statistically was the 2014 season. Bouncing from Single A up to Double A, Story drilled out 14 home runs with 9 of those coming in his 56 games with the Tulsa Drillers. He seemed to have transitioned nicely in the rapid movement in leagues throughout the year. Story posted a combined .263 average with 48 RBI and he worked his walk numbers up to his career high of 60. In 108 games his fielding steadily improved yet again.

Currently Story is playing in the Arizona Fall League with the Salt River Rafters. The extra playing is helping Story immensely. So far in 14 games Story is hitting .302 with 12 RBI. If not to start the season, I fully expect Story to play in Triple A sometime in 2015.

As of right now Story is not quite MLB ready, and with Troy Tulowitzki at shortstop, chances are if he wants to make the Colorado Rockies a position change is inevitable. His strong arm makes him a great candidate for third base or right field.

If Story can pack on some pounds and improve his power numbers even more, the sky is the limit for him. Most scouting reports compare him to such players as Michael Cuddyer or Marco Scutaro. At such a young age (21), if he continues on the current pace the Colorado Rockies may have a pretty good everyday player at some point. The key now is for Story to continue improving and to stay healthy.
