Joe Maddon Will Be Hired By Chicago Cubs, Not Los Angeles Dodgers

Joe Maddon will not be joining Andrew Friedman with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He will be announced as the next manager of the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

There was something fishy when Joe Maddon opted out of the last year of his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. Sure, Maddon said that it was just a matter of differences in contract negotiations and a curiosity on his part to see what else is out there. But for him to resign so soon after general manager Andrew Friedman left for the Los Angeles Dodgers simply didn’t add up.

Without accusing anybody of tampering or wrongdoing, I simply found it impossible to believe that Maddon would leave the comforts of his gig with the Rays without some assurance, or at least a strong sense, that another job was waiting for him.

I was sure that the job in question was with Friedman and the Dodgers. Even with all of the reports denying any link between the Dodgers and Maddon, I just didn’t buy it. It turns out I was wrong, and now Joe Maddon is headed to the Chicago Cubs.

On Friday, the Cubs fired Rick Renteria, and they will announce Maddon as their man on Monday.

There is one obvious piece of good news for the Rockies here: Joe Maddon will not be managing in the National League West.

There is potential bad news for the National League at large, however, as Maddon is now going to be the man in charge of a Cubs’ team that is absolutely stacked with young talent.

For now, I say that we take the good news that Maddon is not in the same division as the Rockies and call it a win.
