Colorado Rockies: Carlos Gonzalez Contract Talk and More

It’s almost Thanksgiving. Before the relatives come into town and overrun your house, here are some news and notes about the Colorado Rockies to soothe your nerves. It will also give you something to talk about around the dinner table other than politics.

CarGo and the contract

While the Rockies are working on which free agents to pursue this offseason, there’s a big question mark looming over Colorado for next offseason. It involves Carlos Gonzalez and the seven-year, $80 million contract that will expire when the 2017 season ends.

CarGo is set to become a free agent next season, but there are continued signs that the Rockies and their All-Star outfielder are interested in continuing to have CarGo in purple pinstripes. Reports out of Venezuela (CarGo’s home country) have said that there is interest on both sides but still a lot of work to be done in order to make the extension a reality.

Without a new contract in place, there will more than likely be plenty of rumors about CarGo being on the move as the season begins and moves toward the trade deadline. Plenty of teams would be interested in CarGo, who is coming off a 25-homer, 100-RBI season in 2016. However, Gonzalez has indicated he likes where the Rockies are heading as a team.

“If you would have asked me early in the year, I would have told you I’m going to wait until I hit free agency and see what’s out there,” Gonzalez told Mark Kiszla of The Denver Post in this article. “But this is a good team. It’s a different feeling. Now I see how guys react in tough situations. We understand we can win. That’s huge for any team, when you trust and believe you can win. It’s not like, ‘Oh, we’re going to play the Dodgers, we’re going to get our butts kicked.’ Now we know we can win against anybody.”

The Rockies versus the World Champions

While we may not know Colorado’s spring training schedule just yet, we do know when they’ll be facing off against the Chicago Cubs while in Arizona.

The Cubs have released their tentative spring training schedule and it includes two matchups against the Rockies. Colorado will travel to meet the Cubs in Mesa on March 11 while the Cubs will visit the Rockies in Scottsdale on March 20.
