If we learned nothing today when the first results of MLB’s Final Vote balloting were released, we now know that Trevor Story of the Colorado Rockies is extremely popular north of the border.

When MLB unveiled its initial standings in the Final Vote competition, which will determine which one National League and American League player makes it to the All-Star Game, set for July 12 at San Diego’s Petco Park, it showed that Story was in third place in the National League voting.

Colorado’s rookie shortstop trails San Francisco’s Brandon Belt and Pittsburgh’s Starling Marte in the voting while leading Arizona’s Jake Lamb and Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun in the race for the final NL spot.

A look at the regional map (found by clicking here) shows some interesting statistics when it comes to Story and the Rockies. Here are some things that jumped out…

Story has 33 percent of the votes from Canadian voters, easily outdistancing second-place Lamb (20.8%). It’s a bit ironic that Canada would vote so strongly for Story when his predecessor, Troy Tulowitzki, now mans the shortstop position for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Story is also doing well in areas that touch the Canadian border, including much of the state of Maine and upper Minnesota.

The native of Irving, Texas, located within the Dallas metroplex, has ensured that north Texas is colored in his favor.

Perhaps one of the more interesting things about MLB’s map is the amount of gray that is shown on it, indicating that none of the five NL players have gained a significant advantage in that area. Consider those “swing areas” that could easily be influenced by a hot streak at the plate or some stellar defensive plays that make the highlight reels.

Story and Belt square off tonight one last time in San Francisco before the Rockies make their way to Coors Field for a four-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

As a reminder, it’s simple to vote Story into the All-Star Game.

Voters can also use their mobile devices to cast ballots at MLB.com/vote or via text message. To receive the ballot, text the word “VOTE” to 89269. To vote for a specific player, fans can text the choice to 89269. If using this option, Story is N5.
