With DJ LeMahieu and Trevor Story both nursing injuries, the Colorado Rockies middle infield has undergone a facelift over the last couple of games. That trends looks to continue into the weekend.

LeMahieu and Story, both injured in Colorado’s walkoff win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, made appearances in the Rockies’ late-night loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. Story started the game and went 0-for-4 before being pulled while DJ LeMahieu entered the contest in the eighth and struck out in his only plate appearance.

The Tuesday appearance seemed to bode well for LeMahieu, who suffered a knee contusion trying to dive for a line drive off the bat of Paul Goldschmidt. Prior to Wednesday’s game, Colorado manager Walt Weiss said the Colorado All-Star second baseman was progressing and healthy.

“He was cleared to go. I got him out of there because I didn’t want him out there,” Weiss said of LeMahieu’s short time in the field. “He’s fine. I just didn’t want to keep him out there longer than we had to. True to form, DJ, he said he was good to go in when Trevor hurt this finger. But I didn’t want to keep him out there very long.

“We have the off day tomorrow so I think he’ll be fine after that. We put him through a pretty good workout here early and he’s running around pretty good. He should be good.”

As Weiss alluded to in his comments, Story’s health may be another matter. The finger injury he suffered when hit by a ninth-inning pitch on Sunday flared up again on Tuesday night and had Story wondering if he pushed things by coming back too soon.

“I’m going to try to stay off of him. He could go out there in an emergency situation,” Weiss said about Story’s availability on Wednesday.

While LeMahieu looks to be OK for Colorado’s road trip that begins on Friday in Los Angeles, Story may need longer to recover from his injury.

Knowing the injuries were in play, Weiss said it caused some especially tough challenges Tuesday night in a game that was delayed nearly three hours by a deluge of rain and hail.

“You gotta look at the bigger picture in a game like that,” Weiss said. “You gotta look at the next day. We’re still in a position to win the series so you have to keep that in mind. It is what it is. You’re shorthanded and you do what you can to stay competitive and get through the game.”
