One of the major uncertainties heading into the 2026 campaign was who would start at first base for the Rockies.
The competition saw several acquisitions this offseason. Notable additions include TJ Rumfield, who was obtained through a trade with the New York Yankees, Edouard Julien, acquired via a trade with the Minnesota Twins, and Troy Johnston, who was claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins. Blake Crim was also part of the mix.
Rumfield secured the position with a strong spring training performance, displaying his power and posting a .913 OPS, earning him the Opening Day nod.
However, one player was challenging him for the spot, but they weren't likely to make the roster out of spring training due to the team's rebuilding year and the Rockies' ability to manage his service time.
That player would be Colorado's No. 2 prospect Charlie Condon.
Condon made a strong impression in spring training, posting a batting average above .380 and hitting several home runs. One particularly impressive hit was a blast against the Royals that registered at 115.3 mph off the bat.
He has continued his strong start in Triple-A with the Albuquerque Isotopes, going 2-for-3 with two home runs in their season opener on the road in Oklahoma City. He also walked twice and drove in five runs.
In their second game Sunday afternoon, Condon continued to get on base, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. He's currently sporting a 1.743 OPS over two games so far.
Colorado, currently 0-3, is looking for offensive solutions. The team has only managed seven runs in three games, where Rumfield has contributed with two hits, including his first Major League home run. The real kicker is that they've lost all three games by a single run.
The starting rotation and bullpen have performed well, keeping the Rockies competitive. However, the offense needs to find its stride after going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position Sunday afternoon.
This leads me to believe Condon could make his MLB debut sooner rather than later, especially after the first 16 days of the season. Colorado could delay his call-up to potentially late April to prevent him from accruing a full year of service time.
The situation is contingent on Rumfield's performance and Condon's potential role in the lineup, especially if TJ is playing well. Colorado will face a difficult decision, but Condon deserves a call-up soon.
