The Rockies started strong with a quick 3-0 lead in Sunday afternoon's series finale against the Marlins. However, they did not score again for the rest of the game, putting the pressure on starting pitcher Jose Quintana and the bullpen to maintain control against Miami.
Things started to get a little hairy in the bottom half of the eighth inning with reliever Antonio Senzatela spraying the ball throughout the zone. He missed his target so badly on a 1-2 offering that clipped the bottom of the zone that the umpire didn't call it, which would've resulted in a called third strike against Agustin Ramirez to bring it to two outs.
Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer chose not to challenge the call, resulting in a walk during the at-bat.
After allowing a single to Otto Lopez, which placed runners on first and second with two outs, Senzatela's pitch seemed to hit Connor Norby, loading the bases. However, upon review, it was determined that the ball actually hit the knob of Norby's bat. This gave Colorado another opportunity to challenge the play, but they chose not to do so again.
Now we come to the bottom half of the ninth, and this is the kind of scenario you can't make up.
Xavier Edwards started the inning with a single up the middle but was doubled up on a line drive by Liam Hicks, leaving the Marlins with just one out remaining.
After a double off the bat of Javier Sanoja, which appeared to result from a poor route taken by left fielder Jake McCarthy, Owen Caissie stepped up to the plate and he crushed a 93.8 mph changeup over the wall in right-center field, resulting in a walkoff two-run home run, securing another one-run victory for the Marlins over Colorado to complete the three-game sweep.
Caissie probably wouldn't have had the opportunity to play spoiler if Schaeffer had made the right call on at least one of the two chances to challenge in the eighth inning. However, Colorado needs to improve its ability to bring runs home, going just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
