Earlier today, it was announced that Jenny Cavnar will be filling in for Drew Goodman on the Colorado Rockies television broadcast tonight. Though only a fill-in, this is still a giant step for women and the world of journalism. Here’s why.
When the Colorado Rockies play the San Diego Padres tonight, Jenny Cavnar will become the third woman to to call play-by-play of a baseball game on television. In my opinion, that’s too little. This is a huge milestone for not only Cavnar, but also all women that look to join the same career field.

Being the only female writer on Rox Pile, it’s extremely empowering to see more and more women joining the work force and striving to get where Jenny Cavnar is today. It’s even better that the Colorado Rockies are the team she’ll be calling (in my opinion).
This isn’t something that should just be simply read about or something that goes in one ear and out the other it’s an important milestone for baseball.
Being a female that loves baseball is already a small population, so writing about it is an even smaller margin. I was ecstatic to that I was not the only female that writes about the Rockies. Our friends over at Purple Row have three talented staff writers that are inspring to me.
It’s even more amazing to see Claire Smith an African American female baseball writer win the J.G. Taylor Spink Award. She is truly an unsung hero when it comes to women writing in baseball as well as black women writing in baseball. To read more about Claire Smith’s journey to where she is today click here.
Women in baseball is a rare occurrence not only in the front office, but as well as when they try to get their name out to the world of baseball journalism. Getting criticism for not being a man or not being able to meet same the same standards as men is a constant that we have to deal with. Sometimes, we’re not even taken seriously by the people we work with. Be that as it may, it’s incredibly inspiring to see women like Claire Smith, Jenny Cavnar, or Gayle Gardner, who was the first female to call play-by-play ironically for the Colorado Rockies, reach such great heights.

This may not seem to be a big deal to some people though it should be taken as one. When you listen to Jenny Cavnar giving you the play-by-play tonight, think about all the hard work she’s done just to be able to get an opportunity to just fill-in for Drew Goodman. Even though she’s the third female to call play-by-play, she certainly won’t be the last.
