For their defensive prowess in the 2017, Colorado Rockies left fielder Gerardo Parra, third baseman Nolan Arenado, and second baseman DJ LeMahieu were named nominees for the Rawlings National League Gold Glove Awards for their respective positions.

This afternoon, three Colorado Rockies, Gerardo Parra, Nolan Arenado, and DJ LeMahieu were named nominees for Gold Gloves. At each position, there are three players who are named finalists for the honor.

Parra

On the defensive spectrum, Gerardo Parra had five Defensive Runs Saved and 9 outfield assists. Neither of the numbers are even close to career highs for him but he obviously still did well enough to be considered. He also won Gold Gloves in 2011 and 2013.

Arenado

If you watched a single Rockies game in 2017 or know anything about Arenado, you should not be surprised that he is a finalist. He has won the Gold Glove in every season that he has played in the majors, since 2013. The only player to ever win the Gold Glove  Award in his first four seasons is Ichiro Suzuki.  If he wins, it would tie him for the Colorado Rockies franchise lead of gold glove winners with Larry Walker .

According to Baseball Reference,  he had 20 Defensive Runs Saved in 2017. That number is fourth best in all of baseball so he should be a lock to win the Gold Glove.

LeMahieu

For LeMahieu, he had 8 Defensive Runs Saved, per Baseball Reference. His career high was in 2014,  when he had 16 Defensive Runs Saved.  He also won his only career Gold Glove in 2014 as well. However, those eight defensive run the same lead all National Leagur second baseman

Final Thoughts

The winners of the awards are voted on by managers and coaches of each league. However, neither of them are allowed to vote for their own players. Also, Defensive Runs Saved is part of the vote, but it’s only 25% of it.

Next: The Rockies have too much young depth

For Rockies franchise history, they have 19 Gold Glove awards (with 9 coming from Larry Walker and Nolan Arenado). They also had at least one in every season since 2010.
